Anil Seth is Professor of cognitive and computational neuroscience at Sussex University, a renowned science communicator, and a bestselling author. He is among the top one percent most cited scientists in the world for his pioneering research into consciousness, perception, and the nature of the self. He is also Co-Director of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) program on brain, mind, and consciousness, Editor-in-Chief of the academic journal Neuroscience of Consciousness, and a European Research Council Advanced Investigator. Anil’s new book – Being You: A New Science of Consciousness – was as an instant Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller, and a Book of the Year (2021) for The Economist, The New Statesman, The Financial Times, The Guardian, Bloomberg Business, and Five Books. The Guardian called it “a vast-ranging, phenomenal achievement that will undoubtedly become a seminal text”, and the Wall Street Journal said “If you only read one book about consciousness, it must be his”. His main-stage TED talk on consciousness has been viewed more than 12 million times and is among TED’s most popular science talks ever. His academic research has resulted in more than 170 publications, many in top journals, and he leads a team that brings together researchers across psychology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and philosophy to address core questions about the nature of consciousness and its implications for society, technology, and medicine. Anil serves on several boards including the 1907 Foundation, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, and Congreso Futuro (Chile). He is a past president of the British Science Association (Psychology Section), and the recipient of many awards for his public engagement including the Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize, the KidSpirit Perspectives Prize, and the BBC Best Audio Drama Award.
